5G, the next generation of cellular network technology, has been around in some parts of the world for a couple of years now as many smartphones on the market have supported the new network.

After a long wait, Indonesia has finally followed suit this year by joining the list of developed countries that have deployed 5G cellular network technology, such as the US, Japan, South Korea, China, and etc.

Indonesian citizens can access 5G through the state-owned carrier Telkomsel. The deployment of 5G network was commercially launched by Telkomsel in the end of May in the occasion of celebrating its 26th anniversary.

In Indonesia, Telkomsel 5G is available in some high-end areas of Jakarta such as Kelapa Gading Jakarta, Pondok Indah, Pantai Indah Kapuk, Bumi Serpong Damai, Widya Chandra, dan Alam Sutera.

In addition, the 5G is also available at Telkomsel’s service center GraPARI in various cities; and some universities such as Telkom University (Bandung) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).

The Speed of Telkomsel 5G

The new network theoretically offers way far faster speed compared to the previous generation: 4G LTE. The 5G network can hit the download speed range from 1Gbps to 10Gbps with 1 millisecond latency in ideal condition depending on location, carriers, and the types of 5G technology.

With that faster speed, high definition films can be downloaded in just seconds. Even you can enjoy watching or streaming videos or games in HD without any hassle.

However in real world, the average of 5G download speed is not that high. In the US carriers for example, the average speed is 59Mbps according to Speedcheck. It means that the speed is 2.7 times much faster than 4G.

So how fast is the Telkomsel 5G network? The speed of 5G network deployed by Telkomsel is way faster than 5G in the US.

According to a test, the download speed can reach maximum at 122Mbps and the upload speed at 46Mbps using any 5G-supported smartphones sold in Indonesia. It’s almost two times faster than the speed of 5G in the US.

To put that in perspective, AT&T has the download speed at 75.6Mbps and the upload speed at 37.1Mbps in the latest test conducted by Tom’s Guide.

Other carriers such as T Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon have the download speed around 67–70mbps with the upload speed varies from 32Mbps–53Mbps.

Despite being unable to hit its maximum download speed, the Telkomsel offers the better speed of 5G than the US carriers do. So we cannot say Telkomsel 5G is slow.

Telkomsel is expected to increase its 5G speed in the future as it will expand the coverage the 5G service to more areas in Indonesia archipelago in the coming months or years. Hope so.
